Sulfur is considered an undesirable contaminant because, when burned, it generates sulfur oxides. Consequently, most finished petroleum products have a limit on how much sulfur they can contain, making sulfur removal an important part of the overall refinery process. Determining the sulfur content in crude oil is an important assessment of quality. Sulfur must be removed when refining crude. If it is not, when released into the atmosphere, it can cause pollution and acid rain. Furthermore, high sulfur content can lead to the degradation of metals used in the refining process. Sour crude is crude oil with high sulfur content (as opposed to low-sulfur content sweet crude).
